Unit 6

Whimsical House

Original Plan

I was initially very apprehensive about this piece considering my perceived complexity of it. However, the moment I began rolling out a slab for the roof, my vision for it in my head seemed much more reasonable. The construction of this piece was pretty enjoyable, as it reminded me of making my series of four pieces last semester. The final product is somewhat different from my initial plan, yet I think it came out better than I imagined it. I am, however, slightly underwhelmed with the texture of the underglaze. I don't believe it fits my piece very well.

Advanced Large Sculpture/Organic Shape (currently unfinished)

This piece is currently a work in progress, but the greenware phase of it is finished. It is currently in the kiln. When I say getting to this piece was daunting, I don't mean it in the sense that I was slightly apprehensive. I mean I genuinely despised the idea of even attempting an advanced large sculpture. When I finally got to it, I drew inspiration from coral reefs with the distinguished curves along the surface of the piece. It's funny that this assignment was so daunting for me, as the construction itself was very intuitive and relaxing. I'm very pleased with how the project is going so far, and I'm honestly excited to glaze it.

Vessel With Interesting Feet

I'm slightly underwhelmed with my performance on this piece, but I think the final product looks interesting nonetheless. I admit I was slightly rushed in making this piece. I felt like I had to crank out something quick after my first attempt failed, so construction was stressful. After it came out of the kiln, I wanted to do something expressive and experimental, to me that is, with it. Thus, I used crystal exploding glaze for the first time. It came out better, in my opinion, than any other glazed piece I've made. It's surprisingly glossy and solid-feeling. I enjoy its texture.

Tea Pot

This piece was mostly smoothe-sailing all the way throughout. One aspect of construction I was worried about was the fitted lid. I was doing something new with a lid that fit into a slot on the top of the vessel. Other than that, I had high confidence in the greenware stage. The glazing, likewise, was comfortably uneventful. I'm extremely happy with how the piece turned out. I think the vibrant crystal glaze covers up the vessel's imperfections very well. I believe this is the most aesthetically pleasing vessel I've made so far.
