Unit 2

Overall, this practice peice went very well. Once I started shapng the pot itself, it fel very intuitive simple, it just took some patience. It was however, a bit too thick. I gained a good understanding into how to make a basic pinch pot by doing this piece.

Pinch Pot Cut in Half

Useful Pinch Pot + Lid

I felt very comfortable going into this piece having done the cut in half pinch pot. I wanted this one to be a larger scale pot, hence I used much more clay than I did with the halved one. Using more clay posed some challeneges that I had not dealt with in the test run. However, the piece still came out pretty good. I think I nailed the thickness, and even had some extra room to curve the top, creating a more interesting,  pot-like rim. If I were to do this project again, however, I would definitely smoothe-out the rim. The random notches and crevasses near the edge look ugly

Two Pinch Pots Put Together

I'm pretty content with the final product of this project, but, in all honesty, I was unsure if it would survive the kiln. I didn't have much faith that the double pinch pot method would work considering my elementary-level ceramics skills. I was worried it would fall apart mid-fire due to the two pots not being well connected enough. Nonetheless, I fleshed out the project, shaping it into a mini pitcher with a handle, and I'm happy with how it turned out. If I were to do this again, I would make the two pinch pots more uniform in shape in size. As seen on the photo, it's clear when the bottom pinch pot ends and the top one begins, which looks jarring.

Small Sculpture

First Attempt

For my small sculpture, I wanted to apply the pinch pot method in a different way, making a taller, narrower pot/planter. Because of this piece's more cylindrical structure, I thought it would be fun to stylize it as a barrel. However, my first attempt of this piece did not go well. I made it too wide and not tall enough. On my second try, I honed in on my pinch pot skills, and was able to make a more barrel-like shape. If I did this project again, I would alter the proportions, make it slightly taller but narrower.

Relief Tile

I personally believe this to be my best project so far. I aimed to make something the was reminiscent of a painting: a young lemon floating in a pond. As for the development of this project, it felt easier for me to visualize and plan. To improve this piece, I would probably just make the tile it's built on more even. Everything else looks good.

Historically Inspired Piece

This piece is based on the stone relief sculptures made in various ancient Meso-American civilizations.
