About the Artist

Claude Monet born on Novermber 14th, 1840 in Paris, France. In his youth, he studied at the Le Harve secondary school of the arts. Besides that, however, Monet received little formal artistic education, instead learning under the mentorship of impressionist painter Eugene Boudin. Throughout his life, Monet had a particular affinity for nature. He adopted the practice of painting landscapes "en plein air" (in open air) opposed to in a studio.  Monet is considered the founder of the Impressionist Movement, a style that involved depicting scenes as they were perceived by the artist in the moment.

Plan:

  • Roll out clay

  • Cut out a square slab

  • Roll out a thick coil

  • Cut coil in half vertically

  • Score and slip coil onto slab

  • Hollow out back of coil.

  • Underglaze

  • Fire

My Interest/Construction: Going into this final, I knew I wanted to do a landscape painting. This piece stood out to me in particular due to its simplicity but with subtle nuances that elevated its realism. I thought its deliberate brush strokes and shading would be interesting to replicate using underglaze. While making the piece, handling the clay and most of the underglazing felt easy and intuitive.

Reflection: Overall, this piece came out decent, and better than I expected it to. I was initially underwhelmed by how the underglaze looked on the greenware stage of the piece. After it was fired, however, the underglaze darkened, giving it a rich texture that I ended up liking. If I were to do this piece again, I would apply fewer layers of underglaze to make the small details and indentations I made on the cliff more pronounced and noticeable.
