Unit 4
Monster

This piece in particular was refreshing for me. It was interesting to re-interpret an idea made by someone else. Upon first getting my drawing, I was initially worried about how I'd structure the body shape with the mouth correctly, while also balancing the piece. Overall, I think this piece went great. I think the dark blue glaze, although not accurate to the drawing, is more befitting of the final product. If I were to redo this piece, I would probably shape the bases of the two mouth pieces to look more natural in conjunction with the rest of the body. That is, more connected.
Original Drawing
Series of Four

This project is quite special to me, as these are the first practically usable peices I've made. I'm happy with the final product, though there were some hiccups along the way. Three out of the four cylinders were a part of the batch of pieces in which the kiln malfunctioned and didn't get fully fired. Thus, the glaze is patchy and thin in small areas. Other than that, I'm happy with how the glaze looks. If I were to do this project again, I would likely make them slightly larger width-wise and smooth out the surfaces more rigorously to make more even coats of glaze.

Plan/Measurements: I planned to make each cylinder out of an 18cm long and 11cm high slab, then slip and score it to a 1-2cm base to make their sizes more uniform. As for the glaze, I simply picked out the colors that looked the most interesting to me.
Lidded Box

Tipped Over

Contrary to my first impressions of most required projects in this class, this piece was actually more challenging than I expected. I thought rolling out roughly equal slabs then scoring and slipping them together would be relatively easy, but I ran into problems when the pieces didn't fit together properly. Even when I began making measurements to make them more uniform, assembling it into a box was still frustrating. Despite mu initial struggles with this piece, I think the final product is decent. The coiled idea I had for the fitted lid worked well. If I were to do this piece again, I would try to complete it in just 1-2 classes to reduce chances of inside cracking, which unfortunately occurred in my final product.
Plan/Measurements: I planned to make 2 leng-side slabs about 12cm in width and two width side slabs about 8cm in width, both 11cm high. The base and lid had the same dimensions as the length side slabs, though the lid had a smoothed out coil around the edge of its base to fit it onto the box.
Handles on a Piece

Unfired State

Despite its simplicity, this is probably my favorite piece I've made so far. I wanted to make something I could practically use for an extended period of time, at least one piece I'd still have several years from now, and I think this might be it. As for the construction of the piece, everything went very smoothly. I was slightly concerned about the integrity of the handle's protrusions that attached it to the main body, but I solved that issue by placing a small piece of dry clay under the handle while it dried for it to stay upright. If I were to do this piece again, I would maybe glaze the handle a different color. I like the dark blue but I think some contrast would look better.
